The SC Insurance News Service, which began operating in 1976, represents member companies who are leaders in the property and casualty insurance industry within the State of South Carolina. The News Service provides information about insurance issues to the news media, the public and interested organizations.

Member companies believe in the importance of accurate and timely information to assist consumers in better understanding how the property and casualty insurance industry functions. The News Service effectively communicates on consumer issues through a variety of programs and services.

The News Service provides information about such topics as auto and homeowners/renters insurance, workers' compensation, insurance fraud, arson, disaster preparation/recovery and others.

  • Statistical and background information
  • News interviews and talk show appearances with staff and/or representatives of member companies on a variety of issues
  • The News Service Speakers Bureau - available to organizations and civic groups that request speakers
  • Brochures/fact sheets on auto insurance, workers' compensation, insurance fraud, arson, teenagers and auto insurance and hurricane/disaster coverage
  • Production of news stories and public service announcements for South Carolina radio and TV stations

SC Insurance News Service Member Services

  • Provides a strong voice in South Carolina for its member companies when an industry perspective is requested by various public and private organizations.
  • Speaks with the state's news media proactively to provide information and interviews through its staff and, when appropriate, representatives of member companies.
  • Works with the SC Department of Insurance, the SC Attorney General's Insurance Fraud Division, the SC Law Enforcement Division, the Governor's Office and other insurance groups on a wide variety of insurance projects and topics.
  • Provides members with Press Reports which are a compilation of print news stories from across the state every two weeks.
  • Provides a Legislative Update every week during the legislative session to assist in easy tracking of insurance-related bills.
  • Provides member companies with background information and research on industry issues as needed.
  • Partners with other state information news services and national insurance industry associations such as the Insurance Information Institute to share information and resources. The Executive Director of the News Service is a member of the Radio and Television News Directors Association, SC Press Association and the SC Broadcasters Association.
  • Provides its members with professional media training.
  • Keeps updated files on insurance topics for use by the media, public and member companies.
  • Holds quarterly luncheon meetings for member companies, featuring key insurance industry representatives and informative guest speakers.

  • Fields consumer calls and answers consumer and member E-mail questions
  • Funds and publicizes the SC Arson Hotline - 1-800-92-ARSON
  • Publicizes the SC Insurance Fraud Hotline - 1-888-95-FRAUD
  • Provides Quarterly Board Reports of staff activities and results of projects
  • The work of the News Service is accomplished through its various committees and quarterly meetings of the Board of Directors.
